This September, the Livingston Public Library presents a collection of charming Hummel figurines belonging to local resident Marty Moskowitz. The larger collection, which also includes plates, plaques, and bells, was acquired from the estate of an American soldier who was stationed in Europe during World War II.
Hummel figurines originated in Germany in the 1930s, based on the charming illustrations of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, whose artwork captured the innocence and everyday joys of childhood. In 1935, Franz Goebel, owner of the W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik in Germany began producing porcelain figurines inspired by her drawings. The charming figures soon became popular in the United States, particularly after World War II, when American servicemen brought Hummels home from Europe as souvenirs and gifts.
Over the following decades, Hummels became treasured collectibles, depicting children at play, seasonal activities, occupations, and scenes of everyday life. Today, they continue to appeal to collectors for their craftsmanship, nostalgic charm, and connection to a fascinating chapter of European and American history.
