Did you know you can make mooncakes out of oreos?! We tried a new flavor of the traditional food, mooncake, that is eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The children loved crumbling the oreo cookies. Everyone had a different technique! Some chose to carefully break them piece by piece; others smooshed them between pieces of wax paper. Once crumbled, the three cookies were mixed with a teaspoon of milk into “dough”. The children flattened the “dough” into a pancake and placed a ball of oreo creme, which was separated from the cookies beforehand, in the middle. The “dough” was then wrapped around the ball of creme and dusted with cocoa powder. The teen volunteers let the children choose from two different mooncake mold designs. Once chosen, the teen volunteers helped the children load the “dough” into the mold and pressed it into a mooncake! Everyone agreed that the oreo mooncakes were just as much fun to eat as they were to make.
