Military uniforms are more than fabric and thread—they tell the stories of courage, innovation, and sacrifice. From the trenches of World War I to the sands of Desert Storm, the evolution of military dress reflects not only changing technologies and tactics, but also the enduring spirit of those who served.

This November, in remembrance and honor of our Veterans, the Library is proud to present an exhibit showcasing a remarkable collection of U.S. Army ground force soldiers’ uniforms and memorabilia from the 20th century. The items on display come from the personal collection of local resident Charles Budzinski, who has spent over 30 years seeking out these historical treasures at flea markets, surplus stores, garage sales, vintage clothing stores and antique dealers.

Every major military action—from World War I through Desert Storm and Somalia—is represented, offering visitors a chance to see how field uniforms developed and adapted over time.

Charles began collecting as a high school student, inspired by his father’s service as a Navy musician, 3rd class, during and just after World War II. “My interest in all things military was no doubt encouraged by my father,” Charles reflects. “I just wish I still had some of his uniforms!”
