November Monthly Display

Livingston Public Library is currently featuring a Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition by artist Du Li.

Known as Mo Chi, “a pond of ink”, Mr. Li is a painter and calligrapher from Beijing and IMG_5481.jpgon display are several of his ink and wash paintings and calligraphic works, displaying a variety of themes.

Ink and wash is a form of traditional Chinese painting that is noted for using several brush strokes to portray landscapes, flowers, birds, and figures.  Just as its name suggests, an ink and wash painting is an artwork created with water and ink, in different densities, to produce variations in tonality. In contrast to a western oil painting that generally displays what the artist sees when standing at a fixed position, a Chinese ink and wash landscape painting presents the artist’s internal as well as the external experience beyond visual constraints.

Chinese calligraphy is a form of aesthetical writing and artistic expression of Chinese language in a tangible form. This type of expression is widely practiced in China and highly regarded in the Chinese culture.

Mr. Li is a prolific artist with a wide range of artistic creations, including various styles of calligraphy, water and ink painting, seal carving, and sculpturing. He sees his creations as a reflection of his personality, experience, and vision, while not limiting himself to any specific genre or motif.

The display will be up till the end of November.
