Message From the Director: Crime Time

“History isn’t what happens, but what gets written down.” -Casey Cep

Livingston Library Community,

Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, spent years researching a true crime stroy based on Reverened Willie Maxwell, a serial killer from her home state of Alabama who murdered his family members for an insurance payout in the 1970s. Unfortunately, Lee was never able to finish the book she dedicated so much of her time to. Author Casey Cep picked up were Lee left off, telling the story in her book Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee

This book has been compared as being Lee’s equivalent to Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, and is fascinating! If you’re interested in exploring this story we invite you to join our Crime Time Book Club on Wednesday, July 17th at 7pm. Crime Time is a true crime and crime adjacent book club which meets monthly on Zoom and explores everything from historical crimes to unsolved mysteries.  Registration is required for Crime Time. An email with information on how to access the Zoom event will be sent to registered participants the day of the program.

We can’t wait to hear what you have to say about this book!

Best,

Amy Babcock, Director
