This February we invite you to join us as we celebrate Black History Month with programs for all ages!
Adults are welcome to join us on Thursday, February 13th at 11am for an instructor-led Adult Art Workshop, where we will be making black history month themed postcards. Using the subject matter of prominent Black History Month figures, adults will use a base of washi tape, tissue paper, stamps, text, and stickers to add a bit of three-dimensional bling while creating colorful pieces of mailable art. Registration is required for this event as space is limited.
Adults are also welcome to join us on Tuesday, February 18th at 2pm for the virtual author talk I Am Nobody’s Slave: An Author Talk with Pulitzer Prize Finalist Lee Hawkins through the Library’s Speakers Consortium. During this virtual talk. journalist and author Lee Hawkins will discuss the examination of his family’s legacy of post-enslavement trauma and resilience in this riveting memoir. Registration is required for this virtual event.
On Monday, February 24th at 2pm, those looking to enjoy a lecture may find Art by African Americans: From the Protests of the ‘60s to the Age of Black Lives Matter of interest. During this lecture, we will celebrate the rich contributions made to American culture by African American artists and see some of the work by such American masters as Norman Lewis, Charles White, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Faith Ringgold, and Betye Saar, amongst many others. Participants will also have the chance to explore some of the riveting public art that blossomed on the streets and architecture of American cities in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests. Registration is not required for this event and all are welcome to attend.
On Monday, February 10th, children ages 3 and up are invited to visit the Youth Services Desk to pick up a take home craft in honor of Black History Month. The project highlights the work of Lisa Gelobter, a computer scientist who developed the technology used to make GIFs. Crafts are available while supplies last and distributed on a first come, first served basis.
Children in grades K – 5 are welcome to join us on Wednesday, February 19th at 4pm for a special Black History Month Makers of History event. Makers of History is a program series where children engage in STEM activities inspired by famous historical figures. This month, the Library is pleased to host Livingston High School’s Black Student Union who will be assisting with this special session. Registration is not required for this event.
