This May we look forward to celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish Heritage Month with events for all ages here at the Livingston Public Library! 

On Tuesday, May 6th at 4pm children in kindergarten through grade 5 are invited to join us for a special Makers of History Event for Jewish American Heritage Month. During this event, children will learn about famous Jewish STEM trailblazers and make their own creations based upon their scientific work. 

Adults can look forward to the evening lecture Jews in American Theater: A Legacy Like No Other on Monday, May 19th at 7pm. This lecture will take us behind the scenes as we explore stories and view rare photos and performance videos that celebrate the role of Jewish people who have played on Broadway and beyond. 

Beginning on May 5th, children ages 3 and up are invited to stop by the Youth Services Desk for a Take Home Craft celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Month. Take home crafts will be available while supplies last.

On Wednesday, May 7th at 7pm adult readers will enjoy our  Bookish Vibes Book Club and Author Visit with Jean Kwok. During this book club meeting we will be discussing Jean Kwok’s novel “The Leftover Woman,” a powerful novel about a young Chinese mother’s desperate search for her daughter in New York City, exploring themes of identity, motherhood, and survival. 

Adults will also enjoy the author visit An Evening with Abby Jiang: Navigating “The Bumpy Road” from Shanghai, on Tuesday, May 27th at 7pm. During this event, Abby Jiang will discuss her memoir which recounts her experiences growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution and starting a new life in New Jersey.

Children in kindergarten through grade 5 will enjoy an Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Makers of History event on Wednesday, May 21st at 4pm, where they will learn about famous AAPI trailblazers, and make creations based off of their work in the field. 

The Library is excited to partner with the Livingston Huaxia Chinese School to offer a fascinating presentation, Origin Legends of Chinese Dragons, on Tuesday, May 27th at 4pm. Perfect for children in grades 2 to 5; Maggie Song will cover the legends of Chinese Dragons, the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western dragons, and the dragon in the Chinese zodiac. After the presentation, children will create a fun craft!
