Kanopy Spotlight: Classic Hollywood Cinema

Are you a classic Hollywood cinema fan? If so, you’ll enjoy the Library’s subscription to Kanopy! With Kanopy, Livingston library card holders can enjoy thousands of movies that they can stream easily from the comfort of their own homes.  Last minute movie nights just got so much easier! Here’s a small selection of the many wonderful classic films available on Kanopy. What will you be watching?

All of Me

From Kanopy: A dying millionaire has her soul transferred into a younger, willing woman. However, something goes wrong, and she finds herself in her lawyer’s body – together with the lawyer.

Love With the Proper Stranger

From Kanopy: Two of Hollywood’s all-time favorite stars heat up the steamy streets of Manhattan in this tough and tender romance. Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen star as a charming, footloose musician and the innocent Macy’s salesgirl who is carrying his child. Natalie Wood received an Academy Award nomination for her touching and memorable performance.

Dial M For Murder

From Kanopy: Ex-tennis pro Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) wants to have his wealthy wife, Margot (Grace Kelly), murdered so he can get his hands on her inheritance. When he discovers her affair with Mark Halliday (Robert Cummings), he comes up with the perfect plan to kill her. He blackmails an old acquaintance into carrying out the murder, but the carefully-orchestrated set-up goes awry. Now Wendice must frantically scheme to outwit the police and avoid having his plot detected.

Father Goose

From Kanopy: Cary Grant stars in one of his funniest roles as a beachcomber sitting out WWII in peace – until the Allies recruit him to be a lookout on the South Pacific isle.

During an enemy attack, he answers a distress call and discovers a beautiful French schoolmarm (Leslie Caron) and her seven girl students. And so begins a hilarious battle of the sexes between a messy American, a prim Mademoiselle, and seven mischievous little girls. Who will win is anybody’s guess, but FATHER GOOSE delivers plenty of romantic fun and adventure along the way.

Modern Times

From Kanopy: Charlie Chaplin’s last outing as the Little Tramp puts the iconic character to work as a giddily inept factory employee who becomes smitten with a gorgeous gamine (Paulette Goddard).

With its barrage of unforgettable gags and sly commentary on class struggle during the Great Depression, MODERN TIMES — though made almost a decade into the talkie era and containing moments of sound (even song!) — is a timeless showcase of Chaplin’s untouchable genius as a director of silent comedy.

Guys and Dolls

From Kanopy: In New York, a gambler is challenged to take a cold female missionary to Havana, but they fall for each other, and the bet has a hidden motive to finance a crap game.

Funny Face

From Kanopy: Paris, the City of Light, shines even brighter when Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire team up, bringing their luminous starpower to this exquisite Oscar-nominated musical featuring songs by George and Ira Gershwin. Featuring iconic performances from two legends of the silver screen, this joyous, stylish film is sure to leave you singing and dancing.

American Matchmaker

From Kanopy: “Nice young man” and Mama’s boy Leo Fuchs (“the Yiddish Fred Astaire”) can’t get himself married (eight broken engagements), so he becomes a schadchen — matchmaker. Ulmer’s third and final Yiddish movie.
