Container Gardening

Do you have a small space, poor soil, or face other challenges that stand in the way of successful gardening? If so, container gardening where you grow plants in pots and other containers, instead of in the ground, could be your solution.

Among the many benefits of gardening with containers is the low cost and low input required,   the possibility of gardening in almost any location, the ease for people with disabilities or mobility problems, and the ability to start the growing season earlier in the spring. Containers add versatility to your garden and can bring in more flexibility in your gardening practice.

Join Master Gardener Lynn Proskow on April 10 at 11am for a presentation entitled “Container Gardening in Small Places & An Introduction to Self-Watering Containers” on the ins and outs of container gardening.

Lynn will cover the many available options, from hanging baskets to grow bags for annuals, perennials, vegetables, and herbs and also talk about DIY self-watering containers, DIY potting mixes, and peat vs. coco coir.

Container soil is challenging because of the small volume of media used to support plant growth.  Lynn will talk of how to choose the right soil for containers, including the desirable traits such as water and nutrient retention, high porosity to ensure good aeration and root growth, low bulk density (fluffy and light), and the importance of it being free from weeds, diseases, and human pathogens.

Watering innovations for containers will be mentioned including self-watering containers, water-holding crystals that retain up to 200 times their weight in water such as Terra-Sorb and drip irrigation systems.
