Did You Know? Stream Movies on Kanopy!

Are you thinking of planning your next chilly winter movie night? Curl with with warm blanket and enjoy the thousands of films available to stream through the Library’s subscription to Kanopy.

Kanopy has something for every interest including: World Cinema, Documentaries, Great Courses, Dramas, and more! This month, why not enjoy Kanopy’s most watched films of 2021?

Parasite

Greed and class discrimination threaten the relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan in Bong Joon Ho’s darkly hilarious modern fairytale.

Winner of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film at the Academy Awards. Winner of Best Foreign Motion Picture – Foreign Language at the Golden Globe Awards. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

My Wonderful Wanda

Winner of awards at Tribeca and Vancouver, MY WONDERFUL WANDA is a delightful satire of the haves and the have-nots set against the backdrop of a gorgeous lakeside villa in Switzerland. At the story’s center is Wanda (Agnieszka Grochowska) a Polish caretaker who has left her own small children in Poland to look after Josef (Andre Jung) the stroke-ridden patriarch of the wealthy Wegmeister-Gloor dynasty. Wanda is adept in navigating the tricky family dynamics between the two grown (if still childish) offspring and the elegant if controlling matriarch Elsa (an amazing Marthe Keller), along with the sporadic intervention of animals stuffed or alive. But an unexpected turn of events turns everything upside down. While MY WONDERFUL WANDA exposes present-day realities of class injustice, thanks to writer-director Bettina Oberli’s empathetic lens, it is never less than a very human comedy.

An Impossible Love

At the end of the 1950s, Rachel (Virginie Efira), a young office clerk living in a provincial town, meets Philippe (Niels Schneider), a well-educated man from a wealthy family. They share an intense but short-lived romance, from which a daughter is born. Over the next 50 years, their lives will be shaped by the unconditional love between a mother and her daughter, overshadowed by the impossible love of a woman for a man that rejects her, and of a daughter for an absent and abusive father.

The Upside of Anger

A sharp-witted suburban wife, Terry Wolfmeyer (played by Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominee Joan Allen), is left to raise her four headstrong daughters when her husband unexpectedly disappears. Things get even more hectic when she falls for her neighbor, Denny (Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Kevin Costner), a once-great baseball star turned radio DJ. This leaves her daughters out on a limb as they are forced to juggle their mom’s romantic dilemmas as well as their own.
