Children’s Books to Celebrate Earth Day

Some fun facts about Earth day:

  • The first Earth Day in America was celebrated in 1970.
  • Over 1 billion people are mobilized for action every Earth Day
  • Over 190 countries are engaged

Here are a few of my favorite Earth Day reads this year. For more, visit the Youth Department’s display located in the browsable section of the Library.

My Friend Earth by Patricia MacLachlan
Preschool-Grade 3

Written by Newbery award winner MacLachlan, the die-cut pages invite the reader to explore how the Earth is a friend to all creatures, watching over us as the year cycles through the seasons.

We are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom
2021 Caldecott Medal Award Winner
Grades K-5

Water is the first medicine. It affects and connects us all…
When a black snake threatens to destroy the Earth and poison her people’s water, one young water protector takes a stand to defend Earth’s most sacred resource. Inspired by the many indigenous-led movements across North America, this bold and lyrical picture book issues an urgent rallying cry to safeguard the Earth’s water from harm and corruption.

Bonus: Download an Activity Kit from the publisher and take the pledge to become a water protector.

Thank youEarth : a love letter to our planet by April Pulley Sayre
Grades K-5

A love letter to the Earth shares striking images from around the world that introduce such concepts as nature and science.
