Celebrating Black Health & Wellness in 2022

Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) chooses a theme for Black History Month. The theme for 2022 is Black Health & Wellness, honoring Black contributors to all types of medicine and wellness, as well as activities and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.

Visit the Youth Services Department all month long to browse our Black History Month display of picture books & picture book biographies in the children’s seating area, and find chapter books & nonfiction for older readers on display in our New Books section.

Here are a few books for all ages focusing on this year’s theme of Black Health & Wellness – including mental health and mindfulness – to get you started!

Black Boy Joy, edited by Kwame Mbalia

Genesis Begins Again, by Alicia D. Williams

The Me I Choose to Be, by Natasha Tarpley

My Heart Flies Open, by Omileye Achikeobi-Lewis

Patricia’s Vision: The Doctor Who Saved Sight, by Michelle Lord

Stuntboy, in the Meantime, by Jason Reynolds

Your Name is a Song, by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow

Happy Reading!
