September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to celebrate the opportunities that come with growing older and to focus on the habits that can help us live healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives. Healthy aging is about more than preventing illness—it also means staying active and engaged, nurturing our mental and emotional well-being, maintaining social connections, and finding ways to enjoy life at every age.
This September, Livingston Public Library is offering two programs that explore different—and equally important—aspects of healthy aging. From the simple pleasure of a good laugh to the latest research on brain health, these programs offer insights and practical ideas for supporting well-being throughout life.
Chuckles, Chortles and Giggles: The Benefits of Laughter for Seniors: September 9 at 2pm
What could be healthier than a good laugh? Join us for an uplifting and laughter-filled program exploring the many ways humor can benefit both body and mind. Whether it’s a quiet chuckle, a hearty laugh, or an unexpected giggle, laughter can help reduce stress, boost mood, and strengthen social connections.
Learn more about the physical, emotional, and social benefits of laughter and how incorporating more humor into everyday life may contribute to overall wellness and healthy aging.
The program is in partnership with and will be presented by Nairobi Vasquez, Health Educator, Community Health, Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center.

How to Be a Super Ager: September 30 at 2pm
What can we learn from people who maintain exceptional memory and cognitive abilities well into their 80s and beyond? In How to Be a Super Ager, explore the science behind SuperAgers and the factors that may contribute to brain resilience and healthy aging.
The program will examine lifestyle habits associated with cognitive health, including physical activity, nutrition, social connections, lifelong learning, and maintaining a strong sense of purpose. Drawing on research into SuperAgers as well as some of the world’s longest-living populations, you’ll discover practical, evidence-based strategies for supporting cognitive health, enhancing well-being, and aging with vitality.
The program will be presented by Dr. Noam Zeffren, MD, a board-certified geriatric medicine physician serving patients in Livingston. Dr. Zeffren specializes in the care of older adults and practices at The Geriatric Health Center in Livingston. He is affiliated with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and is committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care tailored to the needs of older adults.
This program is presented in partnership with the Community Health & Outreach Department at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.

Says librarian Archana Chiplunkar, “Healthy aging doesn’t have to mean following a complicated formula. Sometimes it can begin with something as simple as sharing a laugh, staying connected with others, learning something new, or making small choices that support our physical and mental well-being. This September, take some time to learn, laugh, and discover new ways to make the years ahead healthier and more fulfilling.”
