Being Brave at School

being brave at school

Change can be difficult! They can be especially hard for young children going to school for the first time or moving into a different classroom. Even more trying? Dealing with feelings of loneliness and uncertainty when separated from trusted adult figures in their lives.

If you know a little one who is feeling particularly anxious about the upcoming school year, here are a few books that can help start tough conversations. They can also remind children that you’re always with them, wherever they are.

Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney
Llama Llama is having a tough time adjusting to school! But with the help of friends, Llama Llama learns how to have fun in class… and that Mama Llama will always be there at the end of the school day.

El Cucuy Is Scared, Too! by Donna Barba Higuera
Starting school is difficult – it’s even more difficult when you’re starting it in a new place! Ramón and his monster, El Cucuy, share their worries for the new school year. They end up comforting each other and sharing stories of their bravery!

Smooch: A Celebration of the Enduring Power of Love by Karen Kilpatrick
This book is a reminder that a kiss from a loved one is always there! Fun rhymes abound in this book where children play at home, school, camp, and more. This is because a kiss is “just like glue… / forever linking me and you.”

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
This one is a classic! A warm, timeless reminder of the power of a parent’s love, even when apart from little ones.

Pirates Don’t Go to Kindergarten! by Lisa Robinson

I’ll Always Come Back to You by Carmen Tafolla
This one is not directly related to school, but is a good reminder that no matter where a parent goes, they will always come back to be with their child.

Kalamata’s Kitchen by Sarah Thomas

Super Saurus Saves Kindergarten by Deborah Underwood
It’s tough to be a kindergartener! Sometimes it’s easier to pretend to be something else to get through the day and summon that bravery! But in the end, it’s always good to be yourself.
