Dear Livingston Library Community,

At the Livingston Library, we believe in the power of stories.  As part of the Story Coders Program, children in 2nd and 3rd grade strengthen their storytelling skills while building new skills in coding concepts. Together with their parents and caregivers, they learn how to retell familiar stories and create new ones using the Library’s FinchBot and the ScratchJr App.

Librarians Amanda Winter and Joseph Emery introduce coding concepts while focusing on the importance of language in storytelling. While teaching the children how to direct the FinchBot on the story mat, they retell stories such as “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.”  Using the ScratchJr app, the children then use the skills they have learned to program their own stories. The skills learned through coding foster creativity, help to improve math skills and help children become more confident problem solvers. This innovative and original program received the 2018 Ms. Rumphius Award from the New Jersey Center for the Book at Rutgers University.

The program takes place on Saturday, November 3rd at 10:30 AM, registration is required and opens on October 29 at 8 AM.
